New Years Day, Mummers Parade, Philadelphia, PA.
It's been said that the Mummers Day Parade is the oldest parade in the country. Tracing back to the mid 17th century origins, the parade is related to the Mummers Play, a tradition from England.
The parade offers various divisions:
Comics usually start the parade, they are the clowns, dressed in vivid colors, with an umbrella in one hand, and perhaps a bottle of new year cheer, in the other hand, to warm up against the winter temperatures.
Fancies usually travel in a small float with music provided by a live band.
String Bands entertain with elaborate costumes and performances.
Fancy Brigades remain the largest crew. They are similar to the Fancies, with much larger floats and presentations.
